On March 8, 1857, 40,000 weaving workers began a strike at a textile factory in New York City, USA, demanding better working conditions. However, 129 workers, most of them women, were killed when police attacked workers and workers were locked in the factory, women were pressured, and workers were unable to escape barricades set up in front of the factory in the fire that followed. The unjust death of female workers has received wide reactions in the US country. More than 10,000 people attended the funeral. 26 - 27 August 1910 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Clara Zetkin, one of the leaders of the Social Democratic Party of Germany at the international women's meeting (International Socialist Women's Conference), proposed that March 8 be called "Internationaler Frauentag" (International Women's Day) in memory of the women workers killed in the textile factory fire on March 8, 1857, and the proposal was adopted unanimously.
International Women's Day in Turkey began to be celebrated for the first time in 1921 as "Working Women's Day". In 1975 and the years that followed, it was celebrated more widely and heapedly, moved from indoors to the streets. In 1975, the "Turkey 1975 Women's Year" congress was held with the influence of Turkey from the "United Nations Women's Decade" program. After the September 12, 1980 Military Coup, there were no celebrations for four years. Since 1984, "International Women's Day" continues to be celebrated by various women's organizations every year. Especially 8 March International Women's Day is celebrated with enthusiasm in our country to mark World Women's Day.
